The cylindrical grinding problem
On a cylindrical grinder the money is in the infeed. A hand-fed machine grinds to whatever the operator judges, which means size drifts between operators and across a shift. Once infeed is on a servo and the cycle is in a PLC, the same component comes off the machine the same size regardless of who is running it.
That is the core of what a retrofit changes on this machine family.
What we fit
- Servo infeed. Delta ASDA servo on the infeed slide, with rough and finish feed rates set on the HMI rather than by feel.
- PLC cycle control. Approach, rough, finish, spark-out and retract as one repeatable automatic sequence, with dwell timed rather than counted by the operator.
- Digital size readout. Size shown on the HMI so the operator is reading a number, not interpreting a dial.
- Wheel and workhead drives. Delta VFDs with repeatable speed setting and soft start, replacing whatever is no longer serviceable.
- Recipes. Settings stored per component so a changeover is a selection on the HMI instead of a re-teach.
Universal machines
On universal cylindrical grinders the same approach applies, with the additional requirement that the swivel and internal attachment configurations are handled in the cycle logic rather than being a separate manual mode the operator has to remember.
